IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator 20 Abilities, 30 Shells, One Machine

How IRON NEST expands what you and your crew can do after the tutorial.

Last updated:

The IRON NEST demo proves the core fantasy: manual fire control inside a dieselpunk colossus. The full campaign adds long-term growth on top of that loop —roughly 20 unlockable abilities and 30 ammunition types that change what targets you can service efficiently and how fast you can run the chain under pressure. Progression does not turn the game into an RPG stat sheet; it widens the operator’s toolbox while keeping every shot procedural.

Pair this page with fire control loop mechanics and the everything we know guide for launch-scope numbers. For how regions gate difficulty, see campaign regions.

Two tracks: abilities and ammunition

IRON NEST splits progression along two parallel tracks that meet at the breech.

Abilities upgrade how you and your embedded crew interact with the machine —faster hydraulic recovery, cleaner teleprinter readouts, better map annotations, dual-gun coordination aids, and quality-of-life tools that shave friction off repeated steps. They rarely automate a step entirely; they reward operators who already know the loop.

Ammunition unlocks expand what you can kill and how battlefield problems get solved: armor-piercing for hardened positions, high explosive for structures, smoke for obscuration, chemical roles where missions allow, and specialty rounds for scenarios introduced later in the campaign. Shell choice still happens in the load phase; unlocks only put more options on the rack.

Requisition and mission performance gate both tracks. Waste shells on bad solutions and you may enter the next engagement short on the round you actually need.

The ~20 abilities: what they generally do

Developers Nick Nieuwoudt and Dominik Latos have confirmed the count without listing every name pre-launch. Community briefings and store materials describe abilities as expanding turret mechanics, reload flow, and hydraulic handling under fire. Based on demo systems and confirmed feature lists, expect clusters like the following.

Machine handling and hydraulics

Abilities in this cluster reduce downtime when the turret strains under traverse load, improve brake response, or let you recover faster from partial jams. They matter most when counter-battery pressure forces you to fire, relocate plotting, and fire again without a calm tutorial clock.

Fire control and dual-barrel workflow

Later missions stress left and right guns independently. Abilities here may streamline switching active barrels, preserving last bearing settings, or reducing mis-fire risk when both sides are loaded differently. They support precision, not bypassing measurement.

Intel and communications

Teleprinter calibration aids, clearer duplicate copies of orders, and radio filters fall here. They attack the intel step of the loop —fewer garbled grids, faster reconciliation when High Command and front-line requests disagree.

Map and plotting assists

Tools that highlight grid intersections, preserve layered pencil colors, or speed ruler readouts belong in this group. They connect directly to tactical grid play and help when procedurally generated objectives drop incomplete coordinates.

Crew efficiency

Some abilities reflect embedded crew roles —loader assist, charge preparation, calculator readback —abstracted into faster transitions between load and lay steps. They keep the first-person fantasy inside the cab instead of jumping to abstract menus.

Challenge and replay modifiers

Challenge modes and leaderboards reuse campaign abilities in compressed scenarios. Unlocking the full set is not required for demo play, but completionists will feel the difference in 8 challenge variants advertised on the store page.

The 30 ammunition types: roles, not just damage numbers

Ammunition progression mirrors real artillery thinking: the right shell role beats a bigger number. Early campaign missions introduce basic HE and AP families. Later regions add smoke for masking movement, specialized rounds for fortifications, and rarer types tied to narrative set-pieces.

RoleTypical useRisk if misused
High explosiveStructures, soft targets, area denialOverkill near civilian-sensitive grids
Armor-piercingHardened vehicles and bunkersWasted on infantry swarms
SmokeConcealment and battlefield controlLittle direct damage
Chemical / specialtyMission-specific objectivesOften restricted by orders and ethics
Star / illuminationCorrection and spotting supportWrong tool for destruction

Wrong shell choice still produces a miss or a newspaper headline you did not want. Abilities never replace the need to read intel.

How unlocks pace across 15 regions

The campaign spans 15 alternate-history regions across a fracturing Spain. Progression is tied to that march —new ammo appears when targets justify it; abilities appear when the machine or command structure demands more from the operator. Procedurally layered objectives mean two players may unlock tracks in slightly different orders even on the same region.

Some unlocks are explicit rewards; others arrive as part of story beats after missions where you followed specific order chains. Ignoring certain requests may lock off a branch temporarily —another reason to read newspaper consequences alongside this page.

Demo vs full game

The Steam demo (app 4300500) exposes the loop with a subset of shells and abilities. Treat demo mastery as the baseline: if you cannot run intel —measure —calculate —load —fire cleanly with limited tools, more unlocks will not help. When the full game launches on August 6, 2026, the same procedures apply —you simply have more answers on the rack.

Planning your progression

  1. Master the loop first —see first firing solution.
  2. Unlock ammo breadth before luxury abilities —being unable to service armor ends missions faster than slow hydraulics.
  3. Read orders for implied shell needs before requisitioning.
  4. Revisit challenge modes after major unlocks to benchmark improvement.
  5. Check the review hub for player impressions on which upgrades feel essential —review.

Progression in IRON NEST is depth, not power creep. You remain an operator standing between High Command and consequence; abilities and ammo just give you more honest ways to do a difficult job.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many abilities does IRON NEST have?

About 20 unlockable abilities in the full game, alongside roughly 30 ammunition types. The demo includes a smaller subset.

Do abilities automate firing for you?

No. They reduce friction on hydraulics, intel, map work, loading, and dual-gun handling. You still measure and calculate every shot.

When do new ammo types unlock?

Across the 15-region campaign as targets and missions require new roles —AP, HE, smoke, specialty rounds, and more. Requisition and mission outcomes gate access.
